The Winners Circle
The Aerobic Marathon
The Aerobic Marathon has proven itself to be one of the major highlights of Gym Combat. The marathon started at 11:45 am with over 30 competitors vying for
top honors. The marathon was a battle of endurance, coordination, agility, strength and the sexes.
The warm up lasted 30 minutes then the judging began. The competitors at this time HAD TO be synchronized with the instructor. After just over an hour the large
field was down to 8 competitors.
Each minute was as gripping as the next. The instructors increased the tempo and within minutes the group was down to five – three females and 2 males. The
battle of the sexes – had begun!
With the final three competitors left (2 ladies and a man) the instructors Andro Henry, Callroy Harris, Lipton Lee and Paul Henry turned up the heat with high
kicks, power jacks, speed runs and jumps. The battle of the sexes became imminent as Mr. Ocean Grant dropped out leaving the reigning champion Karlene
Blagrove from Body Language Fitness Center Spanish Town and newcomer Natalie Azan-Debellis from Gymkhana. The battle intensified.
At the end Karlene Blagrove was victorious.
1st place Karlene Blagrove – Body Language Fitness Center
2nd place Natalie Azan Debellis - Gymkhana
3rd place Ocean Grant – Dyna Max
The High School Aerobic Marathon
This was the first staging of this event in which ten schools took up the challenge of becoming the Fittest School in Jamaica and the Fruta Challenge Trophy.
The schools sent their top athletes from backgrounds of track and field, cheerleading etc. who would come out on top… the first thirty minutes set the tone of fun
filled exercise entertainment – the dance hall vibes.
At the 31st minutes the judging began (three strikes you’re out), as Lipton Lee the lead instructor of the marathon turned up the heat with moves taken from their
P.E. (Physical Education) classes, squats, jumping jacks, pick the cherry, jogs, speed runs and high kicks to name a few.
The display of intense energy and determination to win was more than enough motivation needed to take them pass the 50th minute…
School after school fell short of victory, with only five participants left after an hour, Calabar, Tivoli and St. Elizabeth Technical… Within minutes there were just three
students remaining, all belonging to St. Elizabeth Technical High School.
This was a clean sweep for ST.E.T.H.S. and the title “Fittest School In Jamaica” and the FRUTA CHALLENGE TROPHY.
1st place – Kevin Facey
2nd place – Donovan Cunningham
3rd place – Patrick Sherman
Step Marathon
Although, not many steppers turned out for the marathon. It was as entertaining as it was thrilling… This was the shortest of all marathons as Latoya Parsons of
Gymkhana walked away with the coveted title in just over forty minutes.
1st place – Latoya Parsons - Gymkhana
2nd place – Ocean Grant – Dyna Max
3rd place – Daniel Daley
Instructors Aerobic Marathon
As the instructors got ready for their segment, they each had an intense look of wanting to win. Seven instructors took the challenge. Callroy Harris took the
instructors through a 30-minute segment getting the bodies warmed and ready for the ten routines to follow. The microphone was passed to Lipton Lee, who
started the routines. One after the other as the levels of difficulty increased, traveling from left to right, back to front, twist, turns, jumps and squats made up some
of the combinations thrown at them. The instructors showed no fear as they all caught the routines as expected.
Sweat poured and after the fourth routine the difficulty level went up 4 notches. Participant’s started falling out. This was not a test of strength but a test of finesse,
coordination and memory.
During the fifth routine we were down to two Tania Serrano and Kurt Dunn the reigning champions. This was the final challenge, the battle of the sexes. As the
seventh routine came to an end, the instructors now had the challenge on their hands to complete the routines from top to the end without an instructor present,
just calling the routines out. Kurt and Tania caught on well until that moment. Each had one chance left so any one could prevail.
It was a close finish, with both instructors representing Gymkhana
1st place – Kurt Dunn - Gymkhana
2nd place – Tania Serrano - Gymkhana
3rd place – Ainsworth Carridice – Body Trends
Power Lifting Competition
While the marathons and open dance off segment were in progress, so was the power lifting competition…
The ladies came out in full force to show case their strengths and power as they competed in an intense battle of strength and brute power involving three lifts -
Bench press, squats and Dead Lifts.
The ladies were impressive as the audience was in awe. At the close of the Open Female Division the winners were as follows:

3rd place – Sharon Brown [squat – 200 / bench press – 130 / dead lift – 250 pounds] Total = 580 pounds
Just as the ladies, the men were also impressive – the middle weight, light heavy weight, heavy weight and super heavy weight divisions posed a challenge, as
